Chapter 14
The crowd roared in the background while I stared blankly at Charles.
I had to remind myself that I was a knight. My job was to face these types of challenges and push through them. And maybe jousting Hector wasnât the worst thing that could happen.
I looked down at my left hand, where I was still wearing the magic ring under my gauntlet. I reminded myself that Iâd been chosen by the Moon Goddess to come here, and I felt a fire raise in my belly.
âVery well,â I replied with a nod. âOr, as they say back home, bring it on.â
Sybil gave me a fiery look as she passed me the helmet, and I knew that with her in the audience, Iâd be at the top of my game for sure.
âThatâs my red-blooded knight,â Charles gave me a hearty pat on my right arm, and his claws clanked against the metal. âThis armor is certainly becoming, isnât it!â
âI certainly think so,â Sybil purred.
âFits like a glove,â I added.
Sybil pushed her hair out of her face, and her eyes glimmered up at me with absolute adoration. I wanted to show her everything that I was capable of in this joust. And then I wanted to take her back to my quarters and have her right then and there.
âHenry of New Jersey!â a small voice called from behind Sybil, from inside the amphitheater. My lustful, testosterone-driven fantasies took a pause as I reminded myself I had a job to do before anything could happen.

âJust the general administration, Sir!â the squire said as he bowed.
Even though he wasnât a knight, he was wearing a dark burgundy tunic and matching pants with a chainmail cover over the top. Between him and Charles in their chainmail, I guessed that this mustâve been the customary uniform for attendees of the joust.
âShall I take the young lady to the box?â Charles asked Sebastian.
âIf you would, Sir,â he requested politely.
âMy lady,â Charles held out his forearm for Sybil to take. âIt brings me great pleasure to be joined by a lovely citizen of Stock to witness her first joust. Though I donât want to be rude and make any assumptions-- this is your first joust, isnât it?â
âYou are correct, this is my first time at a joust,â she said as she accepted his arm with a curtsy.
âWell.â Charles looked over to me and winked. âYou certainly wonât be disappointed. I canât tell you how invigorated I am to be able to experience such a hallowed noble event with a newcomer. It makes the whole thing all the more fresh and exciting.â
âYouâre too kind,â Sybil smiled.
âHank, the best of luck, as always,â the older knight said. âAnd between you and me, this particular triumph is one that⦠well, one that I canât wait to watch.â
Charles chuckled as he started to walk away, and I felt myself grinning in response. I wasnât the
